Spangles! What could be more 70s than Spangles? Just look at that funky font on the packet (circa 1974.) Reminds us of that other 70s icon, the Goodies.
Originally introduced by Mars in the 50s these small square boiled sweets were available in strawberry, blackcurrant, orange, pineapple, lemon and lime, acid drop, barley sugar, blackcurrant, liquorice, peppermint, spearmint and tangerine flavours. But the King of Spangles flavours was, of course, Old English. Actually Old English spangles were made up of a variety of flavours like liquorice, mint humbug, butterscotch and cough candy. They seem to have been a "love them or hate them" sweet.
Spangles were discontinued due to poor sales in the early 80s and were briefly resurrected in 1995. There are currently a number of Facebook groups calling for the return of Spangles so you never know - they might be back!
